Paint The Moldings the Same Color as the Wall?

Intuitively, I agree that using white, cream or light gray paint for moldings and doors looks polished and elegant but the result of color unification can be outstanding.

Often the architecture in a NYC building is non existence so rather than trying to highlight standard moldings and flat paneled doors the focus turns to the decor. Monochromatic paint colors streamline the room especially when there are several doors in one room. When they are closed they disappear.......against the wall.

Even though initially it seems like a more modern decor choice when its seen in a traditional use it adds an unexpected element. And one that I am happy to discover in clients spaces.

" in a house or apartment with serious trim, painting the trim the same color as the walls makes a space more contemporary. Dark floors can make a space seem bigger, and sometimes white is not the best choice for poorly lighted rooms." says Eve Ashcroft

A few years ago Apartment Therapy posted an article with a nice selection of pictures showcasing traditional apartments with monochromatic moldings and walls.
